What is Envirothon? The Envirothon program is a hands-on environmental science and natural resources competition for middle school and high school students. 5 member teams of students complete training and testing in 5 subject areas: Aquatics, Soils, Wildlife, Forestry and Current Environmental Issues.
Who can participate? Any Public school, Private school, Homeschool group, Scout group or 4-H club can participate. The Middle School level is grades 5-8 and the High School level is grades 9-12.
Who Sponsors the Envirothon in NC and Durham? The NC Envirothon program is sponsored by the 96 local soil and water conservation districts, the NC Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts and the NC Division of Soil and Water Conservation. Here in Durham County, the Envirothon program is sponsored by the Durham Soil and Water Conservation District.
What is involved for teams wanting to compete from Durham County? Interested groups should contact the Durham County Envirothon Coordinator, Jennifer Brooks, at the beginning of the school year to recieve instructions, registration materials and resource study guides. The Coordinator can assist your team with setting up special training sessions with local resource professionals in the 5 areas of study. These resource professionals are key to providing the teams with the hands-on knowledge componet of the tests.
What are the varying levels of competition? Durham County teams 1st level of competition will be at the Area IV Envirothon event held each year in March. The top 7 high school and top 7 middle school teams from the Area event will be eligible to compete at the statewide NC Envirothon competition held each year on 2 days at the end of April at Cedar Rock Park in Alamance County. The 1st place high school team at the NC Envirothon will move on to represent North Carolina at the North American Canon Envirothon held for a week each summer in a different state or Canadian province.
