Durham, N.C. – When
Durham County residents recycle, more than 2,000 tons of waste is diverted from
the landfill each year.
Unfortunately, many recyclables are tossed in the garbage or are unable
to be recycled because they are not prepared properly for collection. Since April 19, 2010, Durham County’s
Annual Recycle and Win Program rewarded random residents for proper recycling
practices at the curb. Winners were
given tickets to a Durham Bulls game at the beginning of August.
According to
Brian Haynesworth, interim supervisor for the Solid Waste Division of the Durham
County Department of General Services, “The Recycle and Win Program is a win-
win scenario that helps the environment and increases the rate of participation
of recycling in Durham County.”
Residents can still be rewarded for their recycling until
Tuesday, August 3. Recycle and Win
Program Directions and Rules can be found on the General Services’ Waste
Reduction and Recycling Web site at http://recycle.durhamcountync.gov. All winners will celebrate over an
all-you-can-eat buffet at the 7 p.m. Durham Bulls games against the Indianapolis
Indians on Friday, August 6.
