Register of Deeds to Temporarily Remove Vital Records for Preservation Process

Durham, N.C. – Annually, thousands of residents visit the Durham County Register of Deeds (ROD) to record and obtain copies of important documents such as death, birth and marriage records.  To preserve these essential documents, the Vital Records Division of the ROD Office will begin to restore, conserve and digitize all vital records.

Effective, Wednesday, May 5, 2010, the preservation process of vital records will begin.  This process may affect the level of service provided by the ROD Office.  Delays may occur when residents seek copies of vital records.

Vital records will be removed for preservation and conservation using the following schedule:

  • Death Records

May 5 to June 23

  • Birth Records

June 23 to August 18

  • Marriage Records

August 18 to October 6

Residents that need assistance obtaining certified copies of vital records should contact the ROD Office at 919-560-0495 or visit the office on the ground floor of the Durham County Administrative Building, located at 200 East Main Street.  The ROD Office is open Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
