Durham,
N.C.
– The Utility Division of the Durham County Department of Engineering reported
that a sanitary sewer pump station overflowed at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, December
27, 2009. Approximately 4,000 gallons of
sewage spilled from the Page Park pump station at 880 Wind River Parkway and
discharged onto the ground with a portion of the overflow entering an unnamed
tributary of Brier Creek.
The
pump station overflow was caused by equipment malfunction and excessive grease
in the pump station interfering with the pump control system. On the evening of December 27, the
station was cleaned of grease, and the pump station was returned to
operation. The spilled wastewater was pumped from
the drainage area and returned to the sanitary sewer system and the area treated
with lime. Based on upon reviews
made by the staff of the Utility Division on December 27 and December 28, there
were no visible adverse environmental impacts or hazards to persons or property.
The N.C. Department of Environment and
Natural Resources was notified. For more information about this
spill, contact Joe Pearce, manager for the Durham County Utility Division, at
