Facts:
- Reports from the Durham County Health Department revealed that
at the close of 2008, Durham had the third highest HIV disease rate in the
state. In 2008, 1340 people in
Durham were living with AIDS or HIV.
- Durham County World
AIDS Day, free and open to the public, is a day of celebration, health
education, and an annual commitment to the prevention and treatment of
AIDS/HIV in the Durham community.
- The
theme of World AIDS Day 2009 is Universal Access and Human Rights. World AIDS Day supports the access to
HIV prevention, treatment, care and support as a human right.
- Durham County World AIDS Day will include entertainment, testimonials,
food, and a candlelight vigil to recognize those lost and raise social
consciousness about AIDS/HIV.
- HIV
testing will be offered at the event.
- Dr. Sharon Elliot-Bynum of CAARE, Inc. will be the mistress of
ceremonies for Durham County World AIDS Day 2009.
