Service:    Community Outreach, Dental Health Fairs and Oral Health Presentations
Description: The Dental Division provides community outreach services to increase knowledge regarding good oral health and stimulate an interest in attaining excellence in oral hygiene. These services include:
  • Oral health presentations.
  • Annual dental screenings for children in all K & 5th grade classes and those in Headstart.
  • Private schools screened on an "on call" basis.
  • Participates in health fairs, and conducts Oral Health presentations as time permits.
Eligibility: Durham public and private school system and some community events as time permits.
Fees: None.
Access: Services provided in the community.

Service:    Community Outreach/Health Education
Description: Health Educators address issues related to health promotion/disease prevention, wellness, chronic diseases and injuries.  Intervention and educational activities are provided at the community, school and clinics.  Projects conducted on a regular basis include:  Domestic Violence, Wellness for Life, Smoking Cessation, Breast & Cervical Health, Senior Wellness Program, Cancer Education, Diabetes, Injury Prevention, HIV/STD prevention and testing, childbirth education, and pregnancy prevention.  
Eligibility: Durham County residents

Service:

Community Wellness    

Description:

Registered/Licensed Dietitians/Nutritionists provide services in the Durham community to promote health and wellness. Nutritionists coordinate community-wide health and nutrition initiatives, create and provide innovative classes and programs, assist in the development of work-site wellness programs, and provide nutrition displays for health fairs and related events.

Eligibility:

Residents of all ages in the Durham Community

Fees:

None.

Various Durham County community sites, including worksites, churches, non-profit agencies, etc.

Service:

DINE for LIFE in the Community   

Description:

Registered/Licensed Dietitians/Nutritionists provide workshops, cooking demonstrations, and nutrition displays for health fairs and related events. 

Eligibility:

The DINE for LIFE program targets limited-resource audiences in various community sites (senior centers, churches, housing developments, homeless shelters, etc.) where at least 50% of the participants are eligible for Food and Nutrition Services (are living under 135% of the poverty line).

Fees:

None

Access:

Various Durham County community sites, including churches, housing developments, senior centers, group homes, shelters, non-profit agencies, etc that provide services for limited-resource audiences.

Service:

Junior Iron Chef Durham   

Description:

Cooking and Nutrition education workshop series aimed at low-income Durham County teenagers.  Teens learn about nutrition, gain culinary skills, and taste healthy, flavorful foods while competing to cook the best dish.    Nutrition and culinary lessons are taught by Registered/Licensed Dietitians/Nutritionists from the DINE for LIFE program.

Eligibility:

Teenagers who participate in programs at a host site, such as an eligible after-school program.

Fees:

None

Access:

 Various Durham County community sites that provide services for children with limited resources

Service:

Operation Frontline   

Description:

Cooking and Nutrition education workshop series aimed at low-income Durham County youth.  Using the Operation Frontline curriculum, Kids Up Front, the children aged 8-12 learn about nutrition, healthy snacking, and simple recipes that they can prepare themselves.  Volunteer chefs add their own creative touches with low-cost, nutritious recipes they help participants to create in class.  Nutrition lessons are taught by Registered/Licensed Dietitians/Nutritionists from the DINE for LIFE program.

Operation Frontline is a national program run through Share our Strength in Washington, DC.  The North Carolina chapter is overseen by the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle in Raleigh.  Operation Frontline Classes are held for 4-6 week sessions and are held at local agencies and community 

Eligibility:

Children, 8-12 years old, who participate in programs at a host site.  Applications required.  Participants chosen on a first come-first serve basis

None.

ALIVE! Newsletter    

Description:

Quarterly DINE for LIFE newsletter that is written by a Registered/Licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist. Newsletter includes articles on nutrition, health and wellness, money saving tips, recipes, and children’s activities. 

Eligibility:

Newsletters are mailed to all households receiving Food and Nutrition Services in Durham County.

Fees:

None.
